Life Safety Readiness Before a Joint Commission Survey
How to prepare rated barriers, documentation, and staff for a Joint Commission life safety survey without a last-minute scramble.
Life safety findings are among the most commonly cited during accreditation surveys, and barrier management is a large share of them. Readiness is a program, not a week of preparation.
Build the barrier inventory first
You cannot manage what is not identified. Confirm the life safety drawings match the building as it stands today, then stencil every rated barrier so future work is visible to the trades doing it.
Close the documentation gap
- Every corrected penetration should reference the listed system used.
- Photos should show the condition before and after correction.
- Records should be retrievable during a survey, not reconstructed after one.
Make it continuous
Add a barrier check to the close-out of any work that opens a ceiling. A short review at the end of each project keeps a building inspection-ready year round, and turns the survey into a confirmation rather than a discovery.
